Faculty Affiliate Dr. Joseph K. Young

Dr. Joseph K. Young is an Associate Professor at American University with a joint appointment in the School of Public Affairs and the School of International Service. His research seeks to understand the cross-national causes and consequences of political violence. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles across academic disciplines, including political science, economics, criminology, and international studies
.Dr. Young's research specifically examines why the interaction of states and dissidents turns violent or not and what kinds of violence develop. His is interested in topics, such as, insurgency, civil war, interstate war, and terrorism. Importantly, he examines the interplay between different forms of political violence and whether they have similar or distinct sets of explanations. Relatedly Dr. Young explore how states gain their income and how this process influences democracy, governance, human rights, and state repression. While Dr. Young's research is mostly cross-national, he is particularly interested in Latin America.
